Ernest Hemingway is one of the world’s most renowned writers with numerous classic books including ‘The Old Man and The Sea’ and ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls’. Hemingway was on intimate terms with Madrid having made the city his home in the 1920s and 30s whilst working as a correspondent during the civil war, and also in the 1950s. Much of the content of ‘Death in the Afternoon’, written in 1929, was gleaned whilst Hemingway whiled away the hours in the bull fighting bars of Plaza Santa Ana. Hemingway covers not only the history of the sport but also meditates on the ethics and artistry of the controversial pursuit. Hemingway also wrote ‘The Dangerous Summer’ whilst living in Madrid. ‘Dangerous Summer’ is another book set in Spain, in the world of bullfighting. The story tells of two brothers, both Matadors, and the competition that ensues during a season of fights. The book was written just a year before the author’s suicide and is widely considered to be one of his weaker works.
